On spreads of characteristic p admitting nonsolvable groups, whose Sylow p-subgroups are planar (Q1063863)

Let \({\mathcal P}\) be a translation plane of order \(p^ n\) and G be a subgroup of the translation complement. The authors study the situation, where \((+)\) S is a Sylow 2-subgroup of G, the fixed structure of S in \({\mathcal P}\), say \({\mathcal P}(S)\), is a subplane of order \(p^{n/4}\) and \(| S| \geq p^{n/2}\), (if \(p=2\), \(| S| \geq 2^{(n/2)+1}\) is assumed). If S''G, the authors can determine (with the exception of the case \(p^ n=5^ 4)\) the isomorphism type of \({\mathcal P}.\) This paper uses among others the work of \textit{D. A. Foulser} on planar collineations of prime order p in translation planes of p-power order [J. Algebra 31, 354-366 (1974; Zbl 0284.50006), and Geom. Dedicata 5, 393-409 (1976; Zbl 0359.50021)], and a result of the reviewer [J. Geom. 19, 101- 114 (1982; Zbl 0511.51004)].
