The Teichmüller space \(T_ g\) of hyperbolic structures on a compact surface M of genus \(g\geq 2\) is a real analytic manifold with the lengths of a finite set of closed curves supplying the local co-ordinates. For \(\gamma\) a simple closed geodesic on M, the time t Fenchel Nielsen twist along \(\gamma\) deforms the hyperbolic structure. More generally, a fixed geodesic lamination \(\mu\) on M is the limit of simple laminations obtained from weighted simple closed curves and a time t earthquake deformation associated to \(\mu\) is the map of \(T_ g\) where the image of representative point M is the limit in \(T_ g\) of its images under the earthquake deformations associated to the weighted simple closed curves. The main result of the paper concerns these flows \({\mathcal F}_{\mu}.\) Theorem. \({\mathcal F}_{\mu}\) is a real analytic map of \(T_ g\) for each geodesic lamination \(\mu\). The author also proves that every tangent vector in \(T_ g\) tangent to an integral curve of a unique flow \({\mathcal F}_{\mu}\).
