If A generates a linear \(C_ 0\)-semigroup and B is a bounded linear operator, then certain conditions on the range of B imply that \(A(id+B)\) as well as \((id+B)A\) are again generators of \(C_ 0\)-semigroups. The paper investigates the influence of this kind of perturbations on spectrum and stability. If B has finite rank, the essential growth rate for the perturbed and unperturbed semigroups is the same, hence stabilisation and destabilisation can only happen by shifting finitely many eigenvalues across the imaginary axis. Moreover, eigenvalues with a real part greater than the growth rate of the unperturbed semigroup are the zeros of a certain characteristic determinant. The paper generalizes known results on functional differential equations and age dependent population dynamics models, it is also applicable to boundary value feedback control of partial differential equations.
