The purpose of the paper is to associate a nonlinear evolution operator with the nonlinear non autonomous functional equation \[ (1)\quad x(t)=F(t,x_ t),\quad s\leq t\leq T,\quad x_ s=\phi \in X, \] where \(X=L^ 1(-r,0;Y)\), Y a Banach space, \(F: [0,T]\times Y\to Y\) and \(x_ t\in X\) is defined by \(x_ t(\vartheta)=x(t+\vartheta)\) for a.e. \(\vartheta \in (-r,0).\) We associate with equation (1) the operators \(A(t)\phi =-\phi ',\) \(D_{A(t)}= \{\phi \in X,\) \(\phi\) is absolutely continuous in \([-r,0]\), \(\phi'\) exists a.e. in (-r,0), \(\phi'\in X\) and \(\phi (0)=F(t,\phi)\},\) \(0\leq t\leq T\), and prove that, under suitable hypotheses on F, the family \(\{A(t),\quad t\in [0,T]\}\) generates a nonlinear evolution operator U(t,s), \(0\leq s\leq t\leq T\). We prove that U(t,s) has the ''translation property'', that is \[ U(t,s)\phi(\vartheta)=\begin{cases} F(t+\vartheta,U(t+\vartheta)\phi)& \text{for a.e. \(\vartheta\in (s-t,0)\)} \\ \phi (t+\vartheta-s)& \text{for a.e. \(\vartheta\in (-r,s-t)\)} \end{cases} \] for all \(\phi\in X\), and deduce that the function \[ x(t)=\begin{cases} U(t,s)\phi(0) & \text{ for \(s<t\leq T\)} \\ F(s,\phi) & \text{ for \(t=0\)} \\ \phi(t-s) & \text{ for \(s-t<t<s\)}\end{cases} \] is the unique solution of (1). From the properties of the evolution operators we then deduce asymptotic results for the solutions.
