[For part II, see ibid. 50, 33-40 (1975; Zbl 0299.58008).] The group of \(C^ r\)-diffeomorphisms with compact support of a smooth n- manifold is perfect if \(r\neq n+1\). The case \(r=n+1\) is still open. Here a very nice proof is given that the group of compactly supported \(C^ 1\)- diffeomorphisms of the real line whose first derivative has bounded variation is not perfect.
