The authors discuss the unsteady free convection flow of an electrically conducting fluid near an oscillating vertical plate of finite extent, in the presence of a uniform transverse magnetic field. The method of Laplace transform is used to obtain exact solutions for velocity, temperature and skin friction. The following observations are made: (i) Because of the disturbance produced by the oscillations of the plate, the velocity decays exponentially as the distance from the plate increases. (ii) For constant magnetic field and increasing Grashof number, in the case of cooling of the plate the velocity increases while in the case of heating of the plate the velocity decreases. (iii) An increase in the constant magnetic field parameter leads to absolute increase of the value of skin friction.
