This paper with a two-dimensional free boundary problem arising from welding. The main goal of the paper is to consider the shape of the weld pool within a mathematical model which consists of the heat equation and the latent heat equation, and may include different physical effects. It is proved that a teardrop-shaped weld pool with a sharp vertex at the tail end cannot occur for any reasonable temperature function.
