Let \(M_{\phi}f(x)\) be the Hardy-Littlewood maximal function \[ M_{\phi}f(x)=\sup_{r>0}\frac{1}{r}| \int^{+\infty}_{- \infty}\phi ((x-t)/r)\quad f(t)dt|. \] The author establishes the two results below under the assumption that \(\phi \in L^{\infty}\), \(f\in L^ 1\) and \(M_{\phi}f\in L^ 1\). Theorem 1. If \(\phi\) is continuous at some \(t_ 0\neq 0\) then \(\int^{+\infty}_{-\infty}f(t)dt=0\). Theorem 2. If \(\phi\) has a jump discontinuity at \(t_ 0\neq 0\) then \(f(t)=0\) a.e. The proofs are elementary using only the Lebesgue dominated convergence theorem.
