Let (\(\Omega\),m) be an arbitrary measure space and suppose we are given two Radon measures \(\mu_ 1\) and \(\mu_ 2\) on \(L_ r(\Omega,m)\) \((1\leq r<\infty)\) satisfying \(\int_{L_ r}\| x+y\|^ pd\mu_ 1(x)=\int_{L_ r}\| x+y\|^ pd\mu_ 2(x)<\infty\) for all \(y\in L_ r(\Omega,m)\), where \(p>0\) is an arbitrary but fixed real number. Then the main result of this paper asserts that this implies \(\mu_ 1=\mu_ 2\) provided that p/r is not an integer and dim \(L_ r(\Omega,m)=\infty\). If one replaces \(L_ r\) by \(C_ o(\Omega)\), \(\Omega\) locally compact but not compact, then it follows \(\mu_ 1=\mu_ 2\) for all \(p>0.\) The same problem has been investigated by \textit{A. I. Plotkin} (real line) [Zap. Nauchn. Semin. Leningr. Otd. Mat. Inst. Steklova 22, 103-129 (1971; Zbl 0279.46015); English translation in J. Sov. Math. 2, 143-165 (1974)], by \textit{W. Rudin} (complex plane) [Indiana Univ. Math. J. 25, 215-228 (1976; 326.46011)], by \textit{K. Stephenson} \((R^ n\) with Euclidean norm) [Can. J. Math. 29, 827-844 (1977; Zbl 0329.28001)], by \textit{A. L. Koldobskij} (C(K) with K compact Hausdorff) [Zap. Nauchn. Semin. Leningr. Otd. Mat. Inst. Steklova 119, 144-153 (1982; Zbl 0497.60005); English translation in J. Sov. Math. 27, 3095-3102 (1984)], by the author (infinite dimensional Hilbert space) [to appear in Indiana Univ. Math. J. 1986] and by \textit{E. A. Gorin} and \textit{A. L. Koldobskij} \((R^ n\) endowed with \(\| \cdot \|_ r\), \(1\leq r\leq \infty)\) [to appear in Dokl. Akad. Nauk SSSR].
