Numerical methods to approximate the solutions of delay differential equations are developed, which realize the following goals: a) to build step by step a continuous extension of the approximate solution which fulfils a sufficient accuracy condition making use of points belongig to the underlying subinterval only, b) to avoid any restriction on the choice of the mesh, c) to minimize the number of function evaluations per step, d) to perform the step-size control. Numerical tests and comparisons with other methods are made on real-life problems.
