The purpose of this paper is to study of methods for surface fitting while minimizing a rotation invariant functional. Main result: Bicubic splines give good results and are efficient when the data set is large. For general data set fitting, we must work out methods for the automatic grid generation and for the determination of an optimal smoothing parameter.
