Isomorphisms of general linear groups over rings (Q1065936)

The general linear groups \(GL_ nR\) over associative rings R with 1 are considered. The main objective is to show that every isomorphism between two such groups is of ''standard'' type. The main idea is to extend such an isomorphism to an isomorphism of the corresponding matrix rings, and then to use the author's descriptions of the latter isomorphisms. Assuming that \(n\geq 4\) and the rings R involved are commutative (resp. \(n\geq 3\) and \(2R=R\) for those rings), a recent result of Petechuk (resp. of Golubchik-Mikhalev) is reproved.
