Let \(R\) be any alternative ring, \(N\) the nucleus of \(R\), \(D\) the associator ideal of \(R\) and \(C\) the commutative center of \(R\). K. A. Zhevlakov posed the following question: Is it always the case that \(N\cap D^2\) is contained in \(C\)? This question is answered in the negative by means of the example in \textit{E. Kleinfeld} [Commun. Algebra 8, 289--297 (1980; Zbl 0419.17013)].
