The paper under review is devoted to the study of a mixed boundary value problem for the linear parabolic system \[ \partial u_ i/\partial t=\sum^{2}_{j=1}(a_{ij}\Delta +b_{ij})u_ j\quad in\quad \Omega \times (0,\infty), \] \[ u_ i=0\quad in\quad \partial \Omega \times (0,\infty),\quad u_ i=u_{0i}\quad in\quad \Omega \times \{0\};\quad i=1,2, \] where \(u_{0i}\) and \(b_{ij}\) are given functions of a space variable, \(\Omega\) is a space domain with boundary \(\partial \Omega\), \(a_{ij}\) are given real numbers. By application of semigroup theory the following result is established: Theorem. Let \(a_{11},a_{22}\geq 0\), \(a_{11}+a_{22}>0\), \(a_{11}a_{22}>a_{12}a_{21}\) and the functions \(b_{ij}\) belong to class C(\(\Omega)\). Then for any \(u_{01},u_{02}\in L_ 2(\Omega)\) the problem has a unique solution. If the domain \(\Omega\) is bounded, then the inequality \(a_{11}a_{22}>a_{12}a_{21}\) can be replaced by the non-strict one. The present theorem generalizes the result by \textit{A. I. Lee} and \textit{J. M. Hill} [J. Math. Anal. Appl. 89, 530-557 (1982; Zbl 0493.35051)] in which the authors supposed that the domain \(\Omega\) is bounded and the coefficients \(b_{ij}\) satisfy additional requirements.
