Let G be a nondiscrete locally compact abelian group. For \(1\leq p\leq \infty\) \(M_ p(G)\) denotes the set of all \(L_ p\)-multipliers, i.e. the collection of all operators T on \(L_ p(G)\) such that on \(L_ p\cap L_ 1\) the map \(f\mapsto (Tf)^{\wedge}\) \((= the\) Fourier-Stieltjes transform of Tf) coincides with a multiplication operator \(f\mapsto \hat T\cdot \hat f\), where \(T\in L_{\infty}(G^{\wedge}).\) It is known that any finite regular Borel measure \(\mu\) is contained in \(M_ p(G)\) as a convolution operator. The author here investigates the relation between the spectrum of this operator and the set (\({\hat \mu}\)(G\({}^{\wedge}))^-\) (which is just the spectrum of \(\mu\) when considered as a convolution operator on \(L_ 2(G))\). It is shown that there exists a probability measure \(\mu\) on G with nonnegative \(\mu^{\wedge}\) such that the spectrum of \(\mu \in M_ p(G)\) is strictly larger than (\({\hat \mu}\)(G\({}^{\wedge}))^-\) for every \(1\leq p<2\).
