An algebra of convolution and multiplication operators is completed first for each single \(s\in {\mathbb{R}}\) in the Sobolev norm topology \(\|.\|_ s\), then in the Fréchet topology generated by all the norms \(\|.\|_ s\), \(s\in {\mathbb{R}}.\) The main result states that the space of symbols is the same in either case, namely C(M), the continuous functions over a compact space M. The proof uses Egorov's theorem. For a function in C(M) to be a symbol it is sufficient to be smooth along the characteristic flow induced on M by the hyperbolic equation \(\partial u/\partial t=i(1-\Delta)^{\eta}u,\) for some \(0<\eta <\). This, however, turns out to be constant, so that acutally no differentiability is required.
