Let \((\lambda_{\nu})^{\infty}_{\nu =0}\) be a given sequence of numbers, \(0\leq \lambda_ 0<\lambda_ 1<...\to \infty\) and let \(\Pi_ n(\lambda_{\nu})\) (n\(\in {\mathbb{N}}\) fixed) denote the set of polynomials \(p_ n(x)=\sum^{n}_{\nu =0}a_{\nu}x^{\lambda_{\nu}}.\) The article deals with the approximation of functions by polynomials from \(\Pi_ n(\lambda_{\nu})\) on [0,1] trying to generalize a result of S. N. Bernstein which states that a function f can be approximated by algebraic polynomials (i.e. \(p_ n\in \Pi_ n(\nu))\) on [0,1] with a geometric rate as \(n\to \infty\) iff f is holomorphic in a certain ellipse around [0,1]. It is shown that under certain assumptions on the sequence \((\lambda_{\nu})\) the minimal deviation \(d_ n(f):=\min_{p_ n\in \Pi_ n(\lambda_{\nu})}\| f-p_ n\|_{[0,1]}\) (sup-Norm) tends to zero with a geometric rate (as \(n\to \infty)\) for all functions f given by means of a sum \(f(z)=\sum^{\infty}_{\nu =0}c_{\nu}z^{\lambda_{\nu}}\) holomorphic in a certain region \(G\subset {\mathbb{C}}_{\log}\) around the branch point zero. \(({\mathbb{C}}_{\log}\) denotes the Riemann surface of the logarithm.) Also converse theorems are given stating that under appropriate assumptions on \((\lambda_{\nu})\) a certain geometric rate of \(d_ n(f)\) as \(n\to \infty\) implies the existence of a series \(\hat f(z)=\sum^{\infty}_{\nu =0}c_{\nu}z^{\lambda_{\nu}}\) absolutely convergent in a certain region \(G\subset {\mathbb{C}}_{\log}\) whose restriction to [0,1] coincides with the given function f.
