Complex Einstein hypersurfaces in indefinite complex space forms have been studied by \textit{S. Montiel} and the author in Math. Proc. Camb. Philos. Soc. 94, 495-508 (1983; Zbl 0536.53024). In general they are not locally symmetric, so a complete classification is not possible. In this paper the author studies the case when this classification can not be completed, that is, when the Weingarten endomorphisms are nilpotent (and non null). The main results are: (1) There exist no locally symmetric complex Einstein hypersurfaces with nilpotent (and non null) Weingarten endomorphisms in a non flat indefinite complex space form. However, a lot of non locally symmetric examples are given. When the ambient space is flat many examples of either locally symmetric or non locally symmetric complex Einstein hypersurfaces with nilpotent (and non null) Weingarten endomorphisms are known [the author, ''Some examples of indefinite complete complex Einstein hypersurfaces not locally symmetric'', Proc. Am. Math. Soc. (to appear)]. (2) In the second part and motivated by these examples, the author studies certain non-singular complex Einstein hypersurfaces.
