A principal \(U_ 1\)-bundle \(\xi\) over the torus is constructed, with a parallel transport along bonds given by a \(U_ 1\)-valued lattice gauge field satisfying a certain continuity condition. The characteristic classes and numbers of \(\xi\) are defined in terms of the gauge fields. Specific examples are given with a discussion of the topology of gauge fields under a deformation.
