The introduction of the heat flow vector and its spatial gradients as arguments in the Helmholtz free energy allows us to derive a new set of constitutive and kinetic equations describing thermoelastic interactions in continuous media. This set includes a generalized Fourier law for heat conduction that accounts for a finite velocity of propagation of thermal disturbances in the medium. Comparison is carried out with other existing models.
