Relations are obtained which determine the boundary of the region of observation (OR) of a lateral wave (LW) in layered media with dissipation. In explicit form OR of LW is determined and physically interpreted for the case of a plane interface between two homogeneous half-spaces. Local and uniform asymptotics of the field which take account of the LW are found. The asymptotics contain a description of the field behaviour in the neighbourhood of the caustic formed by regular and lateral rays. Comparison of the structures of fields in the neighbourhoods of such caustics is carried out. The effect of dissipation on energy flow in LW and on features of the field near the boundary of OR of LW is analysed. The results obtained are illustrated by examples for acoustic and electromagnetic waves.
