This is a collection of reviewed and rewritten contributions to a 1983 conference on urban systems modeling. In addition, there is an introductory paper by Fisher and Nijkamp, not presented at the conference. This introduction does not help the reader (and the reviewer) with an explanation of the purpose of the conference and the scope of the papers. It rather summarizes the techniques available for categorical data and discrete choice analysis in a spatial context. Among them are log-linear models, linear logit regression models and latent class models as well as utility-based models, multiattribute preference models and heuristic choice techniques. There are four main groups of contributions in this volume, dealing with applied optimization, spatial interaction, discrete choice, and discrete analysis.
