Let \(\tau\) be a hereditary torsion theory of right R-modules, where R is a ring with 1. A submodule N of M is \(\tau\)-essential if N is essential in M and M/N is \(\tau\)-torsion. Then M is called \(\tau\)-uniform if every nonzero submodule of M is \(\tau\)-essential in M. For a noetherian torsion theory, the following conditions are equivalent: (a) the filter for \(\tau\) satisfies the ACC and R is \(\tau\)-semiartinian, and (b) every \(\tau\)-injective module is an essential extension of a \(\tau\)-injective submodule which is a direct sum of \(\tau\)-uniform \(\tau\)-injective modules. Eight conditions equivalent to the condition, every \(\tau\)- torsionfree \(\tau\)-injective module is a direct sum of \(\tau\)-uniform \(\tau\)-injective modules, are given; among these conditions is that the \(\tau\)-quotient ring for R is semisimple artinian. Every \(\tau\)-injective module is a direct sum of \(\tau\)-uniform \(\tau\)-injective modules if and only if R is right noetherian, \(\tau\)-semicritical, and \(\tau\) is stable.
