    This paper answers two questions about unitarily equivalent pairs of invariant subspaces \(X_ 1\) and \(X_ 2\) of the Hardy space \(H^ 2(T^ n)\) \((T^ n\) the torus); these satisfy \(X_ 2=\psi X_ 1\) for some unimodular \(\psi \in L^{\infty}(T^ n):\) (I) Must \(\psi\) then be a quotient of inner functions? (II) If \(\psi =g_ 2/g_ 1\) is such a quotient, does it follow that the inner functions \(g_ 1\) and \(g_ 2\) can be so chosen that \(\bar g_ 1X_ 1=\bar g_ 2X_ 2\) is an invariant subspace of \(H^ 2(T^ n)\), not merely of \(L^ 2(T^ n)?\) When \(n>1\), both answers are: no.
