Let \((X,\psi)\) be a noncompact strongly pseudoconvex manifold. This means that \(\psi\) is a \(C^{\infty}\) exhaustion function on X which is strongly plurisubharmonic outside a compact set. An open relatively compact subset D in X is called an s.p.c. domain if for some \(u<\sup_{X} \psi,\) \(D=\{x\in X| \psi(x)<u\}.\) The purpose of the paper is to find conditions for a s.p.c. manifold \((X,\psi)\) to be realised as a s.p.c. domain. To this aim a Hermitian metric \(ds^ 2=2\sum g_{\alpha {\bar \beta}}dz^{\alpha} d\bar z^{\beta}\) such that \(g_{\alpha {\bar \beta}}=\partial^ 2\psi /\partial z^{\alpha} \partial \bar z^{\beta}\) outside a compact set in X is introduced. The following theorem is proved: Let \((X,\psi)\) be a strongly pseudoconvex manifold together with a Hermitian metric \(ds^ 2\) as above. Suppose that: a) \(\psi\) is bounded, say by d, b) the diameter and volume of X (with respect to \(ds^ 2)\) are finite, c) tensor fields composed of successive derivatives of \(\psi\) have bounded magnitude, d) the length of \(\partial \psi\) is bounded, e) the length of \(\partial \psi\) is larger than a positive constant outside a compact set. Moreover suppose that dim \(X\geq 3\). Then X is an s.p.c. domain that is there exists an s.p.c. manifold \((\tilde X,{\tilde \psi}\)) such that \(\sup_{\tilde X} {\tilde \psi}>d\) and \(\tilde X_ d=\{x\in \tilde X| {\tilde \psi}(x)<d\}\) is biholomorphic with X. After the identification \({\tilde \psi}|_ X=\psi ''.\) The proof of the theorem uses, among other things, a result of Ohsawa about the global realization of strongly pseudoconvex CR-manifolds. As a consequence a result about the deformation of complex structures on the underlying space of a s.p.c. domain is obtained.
