\textit{M. Walker} has shown in Bull. Lond. Math. Soc. 8, 273-277 (1976; Zbl 0342.50014)] that every regular packing of lines in a projective space PG(3,q) may be used to construct a spread in PG(7,q), and hence a translation plane of order \(q^ 4\), as well. In this paper, the author elaborates this fact in greater detail giving an intrinsic characterization of these spreads and describing the collineation groups of the associated planes. In the closing section he also discusses briefly ways of generalization of the main theorem and some other open problems.
