A group G is a duality group if there exists \(n\in {\mathbb{N}}\), a \({\mathbb{Z}}G\)-module \({\mathfrak D}\) and a natural isomorphism \(H^ k(G;B)\to^{\simeq}H_{n-k}(G;B\times {\mathfrak D})\) for any \({\mathbb{Z}}G\)-module B. This class of infinite groups was introduced by Bieri and Eckmann; their duality generalizes the classical Poincaré duality of a manifold. We prove a ''Kan-Thurston''-type of theorem for duality groups: for any finite complex X, there is a duality group G and a map \(f: K(G;1)\to X\) with acyclic homotopy theoretical fibre. (In other words, X is obtained from \(K(G;1)\) by a Quillen plus construction.) This shows in particular that there is no restriction on the homology with \({\mathbb{Z}}\)-coefficient for a duality group, except being finitely generated.
