This volume contains a collection of 26 papers from statisticians and non-statisticians presented at a one-day meeting arranged under the auspices of the Mathematical Ecology Group, jointly with the British Region of the Biometric Society and the British Ecology Society. The volume starts with a paper of introductory nature by the editors. The papers are classified in three sections as follows: Section A: General: Colour, feeding, movement and migration. It contains 6 papers. Section B: Analysis of census data; containing 7 papers. Section C: Survival; containing 12 papers. Also included are details of authors, references, author index, bird index (English names and scientific names) and a subject index. This volume is probably the first of its kind. The depth and range of statistical techniques used vary from the fitting of log-linear models to the analysis of census data. This volume will definitely increase awareness of the interests and problems (including solutions) in the general area of ornithology and stimulate cross-fertilisation of ideas.
