Based on observations of polymer spherulites through crossed-polars, spherically symmetric elastic stiffness coefficients are ascribed. On the assumption that the material is stiff tangentially, a singular perturbation analysis of axisymmetric deformation is presented which shows that the deformation is confined to a boundary layer near the outside surface of the spherulite. The results of a one-dimensional elastic-plastic analysis agree qualitatively with experimental evidence.
