The bending of partially supported (bilateral and unilateral) homogeneous elastic plates (contact problem for two parallel plates subjected to transverse pressures) is studied by means of variational inequalities. The main result is: If the bilinear form is semicoercive (i.e. for boundary conditions and external forces, which imply the coerciveness of the potential energy over the subset of admissible displacements or over a subspace of the energy space only), we can prove an existence theorem provided the right-hand side, i.e. the inhomogeneous term of the variational inequality, satisfies certain conditions.
