Given a measurable space (\(\Omega\),\(\Sigma)\) and N finite atomless measures \(m_ i\), an N-fold partition \((B_ 1,...,B_ N)\) of \(\Omega\) is said to be (i) Pareto optimal iff there is no other partition \((C_ 1,...,C_ N)\) such that \(m_ i(C_ i)>m_ i(B_ i)\), all i; (ii) equitable iff \(m_ i(B_ i)\geq m_ i(B_ j)\), \(i\neq j\), all i, j. The main result of this paper is that a fair partition, i.e. one which is Pareto optimal and equitable, exists. The author also answers a question posed by D. Gale and relates his result to those of \textit{L. E. Dubins} and \textit{E. H. Spanier} [Am. Math. Mon. 68, 1-17 (1961; Zbl 0108.316)].
