Let u be a non-negative, real-valued, continuous function in an open subset G of \({\mathbb{R}}^ n\) (n\(\geq 2)\). If the closed ball \(\bar B(\)x,r) of centre x and radius r is contained in G, we write A(u,x,r) and M(u,x,r) for the mean-values of x on the open ball B(x,r) and the sphere \(\partial B(x,r)\), respectively. Extending classical results, the first part of the paper gives conditions in terms of the means A and M for the subharmonicity of u. For example, u is subharmonic in G if and only if \((n+2) A(u^ 2,x,r)\leq n M(u^ 2,x,r)+2(M(u,x,r))^ 2\) whenever \(\bar B(\)x,r)\(<G\). Sufficient conditions of this type are also given for the subharmonicity of log u and \(u^ p\) \((0<p<1).\) The second part of the paper gives theorems of Fejér-Riesz type. For example, if \(p>0\) and \(\mu\) is a measure on \(B(O,1)=B\) such that \(\int_{B}(1-\| x\|)^{(1-n)p} d\mu (x)=L<\infty\) and if u is non-negative and subharmonic in an open set containing \(\bar B,\) then \(\int_{B}u^ p d\mu \leq L(2M(u,O,1))^ p.\) Another theorem states that for such u and for \(0<p<n/(n-1),\) we have \(A(u^ p,O,1)\leq C(M(u,O,1))^ p,\) where C depends only on n and p; this result fails if \(p\geq n/(n-1).\)
