    The author considers a measurable semigroup \(\{T_ u\), \(u\in ({\mathbb{R}}^+\setminus \{0\})^ n\}\) of operators \(T_ u\in L_ 1\) with \(T_ uL^+_ 1\subset L^+_ 1\) and \(\sup \{\| T_ u\|_ 1:u\in (0,1)^ n\}<\infty.\) Then \(\| T_ u\|_ 1\leq Me^{\alpha \phi (u)}\) with \(\phi (u)=u_ 1+...+u_ n\). For a fixed strictly positive \(f\in L_ 1\) put \(f_ 0=\int^{\infty}_{0}...\int^{\infty}_{0}e^{-\alpha \phi (u)}T_ udu.\) \(C_ 0=\{f_ 0>0\}\) is called the initial conservative part of the measure space. The author shows that the restriction of \(\{T_ u\}\) to \(L_ 1(C_ 0)\) can be extended to a semigroup which is continuous also at \(u=0\). This extends results of \textit{M. A. Akcoglu} and \textit{R. V. Chacon} [Can. J. Math. 22, 545-552 (1970; Zbl 0201.066)] and of \textit{M. A. Akcoglu} and \textit{A. Del Junco} [ibid. 33, 749-768 (1981; Zbl 0477.47012)], who considered contractions. Then the author obtains differentiation theorems for additive processes due to \textit{M. A. Akcoglu} and the reviewer [Math. Z. 163, 199-210 (1978; Zbl 0379.60073)] and local ergodic theorems in a more direct way.
