With \(p\) a fixed prime number, let \(\mathbb Z_p\) denote the \(p\)-adic integer ring. For each finite algebraic number field \(k\), let \(h_ k\) denote the class number of \(k\) and \(\lambda_k\) the Iwasawa \(\lambda\)-invariant associated with the basic \(\mathbb Z_p\)-extension over \(k\). This paper proves that there exist infinitely many imaginary quadratic fields \(k\) in which \(p\) is not decomposed and for which \(p\) does not divide \(h_k\), and consequently that there exist infinitely many imaginary quadratic fields \(k\) with \(\lambda_k=0\).
