    Let \(a\geq 0\), \(C=C[0,\infty)\), \(C_ a=C[-a,\infty)\), let \(\| \cdot \|\), \(\| \cdot \|_ a\) be norms on C respectively \(C_ a\) and let W be the set of all derivable functions in \(C_ a\) whose derivatives verify the Lipschitz condition. For \(x\in C_ a\) and \(\delta >0\) let \(S(x,\delta)=\{\xi \in C_ a: \| \xi -x\|_ a\leq \delta \}\), \(W_{\delta}(y)=W\cap S(y,\delta)\) and let \({\mathcal O}(Z)\) be the class of all operators from \(W_{\delta}\) to \(Z\subset C\). For \(x\in W\) let x' be the restriction of its derivative to [0,\(\infty)\) and for \(U\in 0(Z)\) and \(\emptyset \neq {\mathcal B}\subset {\mathcal O}(Z)\) let \((1)\quad \nu (\delta,U)=\sup \{[\sup \| U\xi -x'\|:\quad x\in W_{\delta}(\xi)]:\quad \xi \in W_{\delta}\}\) and \((2)\quad \nu (\delta,{\mathcal B})=\inf \{\nu (\delta,U):\quad U\in {\mathcal B}\}.\) An operator, for which the infimum (2) is attained, is called extremal in B. The aim of this paper is the determination of the number \(\nu\) (\(\delta\),\({\mathcal B})\) and of extremal operators, when B is the class \({\mathcal D}(Z)\) of all ''non-advancing'' operators i.e. the operators \(U\in {\mathcal O}(Z)\) such that \(y_ 1,y_ 2\in W_{\delta}\), \(t\geq 0\) and \(y_ 1(\tau)=y_ 2(\tau)\) for all \(\tau\in [-a,t]\) implies \(Uy_ 1(\tau)=Uy_ 2(\tau)\) for all \(\tau\in [0,t]\).
