Let F be a locally compact, non-discrete complete valued field, V a locally convex space over F and \(V^*\) its topological linear dual. If \(\chi_ F\) is a fixed non-trivial additive character on F, then \(\chi_ F\circ v^*\) is a continuous homomorphism from \(V_{,+}\) into the unit circle of \({\mathbb{C}}\) for any \(v^*\in V^*.\) For every probability measure \(\mu\) on V one defines its characteristic functional \({\hat \mu}\) on \(V^*\) by \({\hat \mu}\)(v\({}^*)=\int_{V}\chi_ F(v^*(v))\mu (dv)\). Every such \({\hat \mu}\) is positive definite. Now V is called an S-space if on \(V^*\) there is a topology \({\mathcal C}\) (a Sazonov type topology) such that a positive definite function f on \(V^*\) is continuous if and only if it is the characteristic functional of a probability measure on V. It is shown that \(c_ 0(F)\) is an S-space if F is non-Archimedean valued; hence all separable non-Archimedean Banach spaces over F are S- spaces (for \(F={\mathbb{R}}\) the situation is more complicated since \(\ell_ 2\) is an S-space while \(\ell_ p\) \((p>2)\) is not).
