In a finite projective plane \(\Pi\) of odd order n, a polarity is called orthogonal if the number of its absolute points is \(n+1\). Let ABC be a given triangle in \(\Pi\). If for any two points D and E such that ABCDE is a pentagon, the plane \(\Pi\) admits exactly one orthogonal polarity with A,B,C,D,E among its absolute points, then \(\Pi\) is desarguesian. A similar characterization is obtained for translation planes of odd order and coordinatized by commutative semifields.
