[For a review of the German version (Berlin, 1985) see Zbl 0582.94001.] From the viewpoint of signal theory, the book covers the basic principles of the digital methods for the processing of continuous signals such as picture signals. In addition, it reviews schemes for correcting signal distortion in imaging systems, for the enhancement of picture contrast, and for the automatic measurement of picture details. The book may be used as a standard text for advanced students in electrical engineering and computer science. The present edition is an extended and updated version of the original Russian edition (Moscow, 1979). The main part of the book is devoted to fundamentals of the theory of digital signal processing: elements of signal theory, discretization and quantization of signals, discrete representations of linear transforms, linear transforms algorithms, digital statistical methods. The second part contains descriptions of specific examples of picture processing: correcting imaging systems, picture enhancement and preparation, measuring the coordinates of objects in pictures. The text contains new results on digital filtering and transformation. In spite of the numerous examples (in remote sensing, medical diagnostics, and nondestructive testing), attention is focused on theoretical aspects.
