Three methods are used to construct the nonlinear evolution equations governing the propagation of single waves: the iterative, asymptotic and spectral. The paper gives a comparative analysis of these methods including the problems of the convergence and the correctness. The model second-order nonlinear equation is chosen as a basic one and the corresponding evolution equations are derived by means of all these methods. It is shown that although the evolution equations of the first order are the same within all of three presented methods, the next approximations differ and the best convergence of the exact solution is obtained by using the iterative method.
