The author gives a necessary and sufficient condition for a separable metric space to have a superextension that is homeomorphic to a Hilbert cube. The result of \textit{J. van Mill} and \textit{A. Schrijver} [Period. Math. Hung. 10, 15-24 (1979; Zbl 0347.54015)] is thus stengthened.
