      The paper contains four theorems which give an answer to the question when a Hausdorff space is a continuous (and irreducible) image of a compact ordered space (a Hausdorff arc). Three of them are formulated in internal terms of a given space. For example theorem 2 says that a compact Hausdorff space X is a continuous image of a compact ordered space iff there exists a dense subset D of X and two chains \({\mathcal L}\), \({\mathcal R}\) of (relatively) closed subsets of D such that: (a) \({\mathcal L}\cup {\mathcal R}\) is a subbase for closed subsets in D, and (b) the family \(S=\{cl_ X(A\cap B):\) \(A\in {\mathcal L}\), \(B\in {\mathcal R}\}\) is a subbase for closed sets in X.
