Let V be a finite-dimensional vector space over a field F and let G be a group of linear transformations of V. Consider the induced action of G on the tensor algebra \(F<V>\) of the space V. This paper is a contribution to the study of the algebra of invariants \(F<V>^ G\). A consequence of the main result of this paper is that if (det g)\({}^ m=1\), for a fixed \(m\geq 1\) and all \(g\in G\), then the algebra \(F<V>^ G\) is finitely generated iff G is a finite group of scalar matrices. This extends the corresponding result for a finite group G which was proved by Dicks, Formanek and Kharchenko. For any reductive group G (i.e. all rational representations of G are completely reducible) the author offers necessary and sufficient conditions for \(F<V>^ G\) to be finitely generated as an algebra. The tensor algebra \(F<V>\) can be viewed as an S-algebra (i.e. an associative algebra on whose homogeneous components symmetric groups act). Any homogeneous subalgebra of \(F<V>\) closed with respect to the action of symmetric groups is called an S-subalgebra. The author proves that \(F<V>^ G\) is a finitely generated S-algebra for any reductive group G.
