Analysis of irreducible representations of the group \(U(4)\supset U_ p(2)\times U_ n(2)\) (Q1072664)

Using the projection operator technique the authors construct the nonorthogonal basis for the space of any irreducible representation of the unitary group \(U(4)\), which corresponds to reduction onto the subgroup \(U_ p(2)\times U_ n(2)\). The subgroups \(U_ p(2)\) and \(U_ n(2)\) are taken from nuclear physics: they correspond to proton and neutron spin spaces. The formulas of action of infinitesimal operators of the representation onto the basis elements are given. The problem of orthogonalization of the basis is discussed.
