R is a right artinian ring with identity. Let M be an R-module. If the Jacobson radical J(M) of M is the unique maximal submodule of M, then M is called hollow. The author studies the following two conditions for a direct sum D(3) of three non-zero hollow modules: (*,3) Every maximal submodule of D(3) is also a direct sum of hollow modules, and (**,3) Every maximal submodule of D(3) contains a non-trivial direct summand of D(3). If R is a generalized uniserial ring, (*,3) and (**,3) are satisfied [the author, Osaka J. Math. 21, 671-677 (1984; Zbl 0543.16008) and 22, 81-98 (1985; Zbl 0559.16010)]. A ring is called a US-3 ring if (**,3) is satisfied for any D(3). The author studies the lattice of submodules of eR, e a primitive idempotent of R, R a US-3 ring and obtains a complete characterization. Moreover, both for a US-3 ring and such a ring with the extra condition: every hollow module is quasi-projective, equivalent conditions are given in terms of modules. The paper ends with several examples.
