This paper is concerned with the extension to non-Noetherian situations of results from the well-known paper by \textit{D. Eisenbud} and \textit{E. G. Evans jun.} [J. Algebra 27, 278-305 (1973; Zbl 0286.13012)]. The methods used are descended from the techniques introduced by the author in his paper in Pac. J. Math. 62, 117-126 (1976; Zbl 0308.13014), although the author points out that the presentatin is quite different and no familiarity with his earlier paper is required. The results, in {\S} 2 of the paper, begin with a generalization of Bass' stable range theorem, which permits an extension of Kronecker's theorem that radical ideals (which are radicals of finitely generated ideals) are radicals of (dim \(R+1\))-generated ideals, and also leads on to non-Noetherian versions of the ''basic element theorem'', Serre's theorem (concerning direct summands), Bass' cancellation theorem, and the Forster-Swan theorem. The paper also includes a few examples which illustrate the necessity of some of the modifications which have been made in the presentation.
