Non-free torsion-free profinite groups with open free subgroups (Q1073905)

A conjecture by Jarden generalizing Serre's result, that every torsion- free pro-p-group containing an open free subgroup is free, is disproved by showing that for every \(e\geq 3\) there exists a non-free torsion-free profinite group containing an open free subgroup isomorphic to \(\hat F_ e\). It has been shown previously that the conjecture is true for \(e=2\) and does not hold for \(e=1\) and for e infinite.
