The following theorem will be proved in this article: Let f be meromorphic in the complex plane such that \(\bar N(r,f)+\bar N(r,1/f)=S(r,f)\) and let P be a homogeneous differential polynomial in f not reducing to a constant. Then f and P have the same order of growth and \(\bar N(r,P)+\bar N(r,1/P)=S(r,P).\) Therefore also \(\theta (a,P)=0\) for all \(a\neq 0,\infty\), hence no complex number \(a\neq 0,\infty\) is an exceptional value in the Borel sense for distinct zeros of P. The reviewer remarks that the notion of S(r,f) is defined here by two conditions, the first of them being the familiar Hayman condition \(S(r,f)=o(T(r,f)).\) However, it is not difficult to see that the only point where the additional condition will be used in this article, does actually need the Hayman condition only; hence the additional condition for defining S(r,f) is superfluous.
