The author first proves the general form of the Bergman-Schiffer interpolation theorem [\textit{S. Bergman} and \textit{M. Schiffer}, Compos. Math. 8, 205-249 (1951; Zbl 0043.084)], eliminating unnecessary conditions required by several other authors. This fundamental result allows him to obtain even boundary value interpolation theorems. Of particular interest are also the applications in which several open problems are solved. Using complex logarithmic kernels, boundary sets of uniqueness for the Dirichlet class in the unit disc are characterized as follows: A set \(E\subset \{z:\) \(| z| =1\}\) of positive capacity is not a set of uniqueness for the class mentioned above if and only if there is a constant \(c>0\) such that \[ | \int_{E}d\mu |^ 2\leq c\int_{E\times E}\log (1/(1-z\bar w))d\mu (z)d{\bar \mu}(w) \] for every measure \(\mu\) supported by E. Another important result is the following. Let \(\Sigma\) be the class of univalent analytic functions on \(0<| z| <1\) normalized by \(f(z)=1/z+...\) near 0 and \(\tilde f\) a given complex-valued function on a set \(E\subset \{z:\) \(| z| =1\}\) of positive measure. Then there is a function \(f\in \Sigma\) such that \(f|_ E=\tilde f\) if and only if \[ \tilde F=\log [(\tilde f(e^{it})-\tilde f(e^{is}))/(e^{-it}-e^{-is})] \] is a well- defined symmetric measurable function on \(E^ 2\) which satisfies \[ | \int_{E\times E}\alpha (e^{it})\alpha (e^{is})\tilde F(e^{it},e^{is})dt ds| \leq \quad \] \[ \leq \int_{E\times E}\alpha (e^{it})\alpha \overline{(e^{is})}\log (1/(1-e^{i(t- s)}))dt d\quad s \] for all \(\alpha \in L^{\infty}(E)\). A corresponding theorem for bounded univalent mappings is stated in Theorem 10. Several other interesting results on interpolation are given.
