Open string models were classified by specifying the partition functions for the non-interacting string using the modular group. The partition functions defined as suitable traces in the Hilbert space of a non- interacting string were already discussed by the author [Nucl. Phys. B 120, 125 (1977)]. For the reduced helicity partition function of a Lorentz invariant string theory an integral linear combination of functions was derived. These functions were defined. A proof was given for the reduced helicity partition function. New models for open strings may not exist within the presently established framework. But the bosonic string in 14 dimensions is of interest. For \(D=8\) a linear combination which satisfies all conditions may be found. The relation between the bosonic and superstring sectors of the heterotic string is also of interest.
