The main result is: for any infinite field F and any n the inclusion \(GL_{n-1}(F)\hookrightarrow GL_ n(F)\) induces isomorphisms \(H_ i(GL_{n-1}(F))\to H_ i(GL_ n(F))\) on the range \(i\leq n-1\) and the cohomological multiplication induces an isomorphism \(K^ M_ n(F)\to^{a}H_ n(GL_ n(F))/H_ n(GL_{n-1}(F)).\) As application, one defines finite maps \(K_*(F)\to K^ M_*(F)\) from the Quillen's to Milnor's K-groups. Then one shows (and following the author, this was the main motivation of the work) that the characteristic class map \(c_{n,n}: K_ n(F)\to K_ n(F)\) factorizes as \(K_ n(F)\to K^ M_ n(F)\to K_ n(F),\) where the first arrow is just the above and the second is the natural one induced by multiplication in K-theory.
